A midfielder with excellent Passing completes more of the passes they attempt, which means more rating-boosting successful passes over ninety minutes. A defender with strong Defending and Physical wins a higher share of tackles, generating more rating-boosting defensive actions.
The reverse is equally true. A defender with weak Defending loses more duels, concedes more fouls trying to compensate physically, and accumulates rating-reducing events far more often.
In other words, attributes don't appear directly in the rating formula — they shape the frequency of the specific events that do. A player with elite attributes for their role doesn't get an automatic bonus; they simply generate far more opportunities to earn one.
Position Changes What "Good" Looks Like
Because the rating is built from actual actions, the profile of a good rating looks completely different depending on where a player lines up.
A striker's rating leans heavily on Shooting translating into goals and shots on target. A winger's leans on Dribbling and Pace translating into successful take-ons and chances created. A defensive midfielder or center-back leans on Defending and Physical translating into tackles and interceptions.
This is why comparing a striker's rating directly to a center-back's rating rarely tells you very much. Each position has an entirely different set of rating-relevant actions available to it during a typical match.
Goalkeepers Rate Differently Again
Goalkeepers push the position-dependent nature of the rating to its extreme. A goalkeeper's contribution leans almost entirely on Reflexes, Diving, and Positioning translating into saves, rather than on the passing or dribbling events that shape an outfield player's number.
A goalkeeper who faces very few shots simply has fewer opportunities to generate rating-boosting events than one facing a barrage of attempts — a quiet defensive performance behind a dominant back line doesn't automatically produce a standout rating, while a keeper who makes several difficult saves against a much stronger opponent can significantly outrate almost everyone else on the pitch.
This mirrors real football commentary surprisingly closely. A goalkeeper who "wasn't tested" is rarely praised as highly as one who "kept his team in the match," even when both kept a clean sheet.

This matters because form during a match is not fixed. A player who starts poorly and then produces a string of strong defensive actions will see their rating recover in real time, exactly as a scout watching live would revise their impression as the match develops.
The Practical Role of Match Ratings
The live rating isn't just informational — it directly drives one of the engine's core automated systems. When deciding who to substitute, the engine weighs a tired, low-rated player far more heavily as a candidate to be replaced than a player who is fresh and performing well.
A player sitting well below the baseline becomes a strong candidate to be withdrawn, while a player performing well above it is protected from being substituted purely for tactical reasons. Rating and fatigue work together, not separately, in that decision.
This is the same logic a real coaching staff applies from the touchline: a struggling player who also looks physically spent is an obvious substitution, while a player still performing well is left on the pitch even if they're visibly tiring.
Reading Ratings Like a Manager
Match ratings are most useful after the fact, when reviewing how your squad actually performed rather than how you expected them to perform.
A player who consistently rates below the baseline in a specific role is often signaling a mismatch between their attributes and what that position demands — a low-Defending fullback being asked to defend one-on-one repeatedly, for example, or a low-Passing midfielder deployed in a possession-heavy tactical system.
